The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is taking one big step towards inclusivity by announcing that they will be making major changes to their subways and buses this week.
Over the week, a recent bulletin that was sent to MTA staff revealed that the phrase "ladies and gentleman" will be replaced with more gender-neutral terminology. That includes phrases such as "passengers," "riders" and "everyone." Changes to the MTA language should be effective immediately, with pre-recorded messages being updated in the coming days.
MTA's revision to their announcements comes as part of a tactic called the NYC Subway Action Plan and its goal to communicate better with customers. Part of that initiative also includes nixing their pre-recorded messages and using their staff for live announcements.
